Being single is similar to being in any healthy relationship. You have your ups and downs, sometimes things are not perfect and you do have to get on with your life.
If you really are going to be a happy single, you have to stop treating being single as the annoying time that you pass between relationships and embrace it. Rather than focusing on what you lack, focus on what you have: You. ~ Natalie Lue, Life Coach and Blogger of “Baggage Reclaim” It is amazing how many people misconstrue the state of being single. It is either associated with being lonely and desperate. Take Charlotte Brontë’s quote for example,
The trouble is not that I am single and likely to stay single, but that I am lonely and likely to stay lonely.
Or, it is portrayed to be a result of grand dislike for the generalised characteristics associated with the opposite sex. Example? Gladly.
I am single because I am allergic for cursing words and bad table manners. ~ Hiroko Sakai
Spinster: a woman who wants to be free from a man’s bondage, so she goes to work for an employer and remains unburdened by someone willing to pay her mortgage. By virtue of not wading into the gene pool, she never has children who might betray her to a nursing home her neighbors find some excuse to do that. ~ Bauvard in “Evergreens Are Prudish”
Or simply because the single person in question cannot land a suitable partner. Like in this extract from Carrie Adam’s “The Godmother”,
“You’ll meet someone soon. No one knows what’s round the corner.”
How many corners, because I feel like I’ve turned them all. I meet people all the time. It never works out. I don’t know why.
What I often wonder is why society finds it so difficult to view the state of being single as a period where an individual is happy to be without a romantic partner, enjoying the fruits of singlehood and self-company, and yet is not abhorred, revolted or remotely chagrined by the idea of finding that special someone someday. And even if that special someone does not come along, it’s still alright because love exists in way too many forms and percolates through to every individual somehow. It can be a conscious choice to remain single because a person is perfectly at peace with whatever his/her current situation is and does not find it compelling to be with someone else. It doesn’t have to stem from any kind of commitment phobia or a deep-rooted hatred for the opposite sex. It doesn’t even have to mean that a single person will not be willing to ever enter a relationship. It just might mean that being single is a whole lot of fun.

Being single has its advantages and disadvantages. Again, I am not saying that wanting to be in a relationship with another person is contemptible, no. It is in fact a beautiful desire. What I am saying is that not being in one is not contemptible either. It is up to the person to be content with the choices he/she makes. No matter what happens, we are all masters of our own fate and free will is what gives us that authority. Being a proud individual is never an option, it is a must whether one is or is not in a relationship. After all, you are always in a relationship with yourself. Whether you view these as profound or funny quotes about being single, they all make a point. Interpret it in a positive way and live life to the fullest. And now I shall bid farewell with my favorite quote on this matter as famously uttered by none other than the fabulous Carrie Bradshaw in “Sex and the City” (Season VI, Episode 18 Part II: An American Girl in Paris):
The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you find someone to love the you that you love, well, that’s just fabulous.
